“Not too flashy?”

“I’d say just the right amount of flash and sparkle.” His face lights up, and he takes the ring out of the box to let me try it on. I wrestle my wedding ring off to let him put it on, but it’s a little snug.

“Damn. I thought I had gotten the size perfect. I took that sapphire ring you wear a lot to the store to make sure I got the right size. Fucked that up.”

“No, you didn’t.” He holds my hand up, the ring almost over my knuckle, but not quite. God, my fingers look like sausages tonight.

“Your finger begs to differ. Shit. I can get it resized this week. Sorry, Zee. I wanted tonight to be perfect.”

“It is. You don’t need to get it altered. I can wear it on a chain until it fits.”

“What? It needs to be sized. I don’t want you wearing it on a chain.”

“Coop, listen to me. I love the ring. I love being married to you, and I love the life we’re building together. If we’ve learned anything since we met, it’s that life can be… unpredictable.”

“Yeah, but a ring isn’t unpredictable. In fact, it’s very predictable. I should’ve just taken you to pick it out.”

The waiter arrives with our food, but Coop is still muttering under his breath.

“I have a surprise for you, too.”

“Hopefully, yours is more successful than mine.”

“That all depends on how you look at it.” I reach into my purse and bring out a long, thin box wrapped in a white ribbon. “Open it, but don’t place it on the table.”

“O-kay.” He unties the ribbon and slides open the lid, his expression puzzled. “I thought you threw these out? Am I supposed to frame this or something? I’m feeling better about my wrongly sized gift right about now. Besides, I thought these things faded over time.”

“They do.”

“I’m confused. What do you want me to do with this?”

“Coop, I took that this morning.” His eyes go wide as saucers.

“Seriously? Is this why the ring doesn’t fit?”

“Yep. I’m pregnant. You officially have the most efficient sperm on the planet.”

“Holy shit.”

“Good holy shit or bad holy shit?”

He jumps out of his chair and sweeps me up into his arms before announcing our news to the entire restaurant.

“It’s a hell, yeah, holy shit! Did you hear that, everyone? My swimmers are fucking Olympians. We’re having a baby.” His lips crash down on mine in a fierce kiss, and I know that we’re in for another life-altering adventure. Sometimes the best-laid plans go out the window, making way for the most amazing moments of your life. When it comes to Coop and me, those moments come from the best lay and zero plans.
