Chapter 27
Polly
Eight months later
Will, the lead singer of Late Nyght Smoke, riled up the crowd and had them chanting and clapping as Polly watched from behind the curtains. She clapped along and catcalled the band, which earned her grins from each of the guys.
Late Nyght Smoke had released their new album that summer, but Flynn and Polly had written the songs. She thought they’d found a middle ground, which let them stay true to the band’s sound but also bring in new fans. They’d also included Flynn and Polly’s duet on the album — the ballad had been a hit. Their album had hit the top ten within the release week and stayed there steadily.
Polly and Flynn’s bands unfortunately hadn’t been able to tour together that year, but she and Flynn adopted a “one week” rule — they never spent more than a week apart. Whichever one of them had a day off flew to see the other wherever they were on tour. They also did movie nights over the phone on Tuesdays when they were apart. They made the best of the long distance, and hoped to tour together, eventually.
After the song ended, one of the road crew carried a chair to center stage, placed it, and ran off.
Polly frowned. That wasn’t usually part of the show. Usually, they played their last song at this point.
“You’re in for a treat tonight,” Will said into the microphone. Cheers and applause went up.
“Polly,” a tiny woman wearing a headset said from beside Polly, which made her jump. She handed Polly stage earpieces. “Please join them onstage.”
“Wh-” Polly began, but she glanced up and saw Flynn gesture for her. She started to put in the earpieces. “What’s going on?”
“Don’t worry, honey. Get out there,” the woman said with a smile. Then she turned and ran off.
What in the world?
Polly finished inserting the earpieces and walked toward Flynn. He approached the chair. She didn’t have a guitar. Did they want her to sing?
The crowd went wild when Polly appeared onstage. She raised her hands in the air and waved in acknowledgment.
Flynn motioned for her to sit in the chair, which she did. She faced directly toward the packed crowd.
Flynn kissed her hair. “I know you’re wondering what’s going on. You’ll see in a minute.”
Flynn began playing a slow song on his guitar. The rest of the band soon joined in. He started singing and crooned slow, soulful lyrics about eternal love and life. Her heart pounded in her chest. What was going on? She’d never heard this song before and Flynn so rarely sang.
Flynn sang the sweet lyrics and skillfully played the slow guitar riffs. Tears filled Polly’s eyes as she listened to the lyrics of the love song. It was beautiful. Did Flynn write this? Did he really feel this way? About her?
“I love you,” she mouthed to Flynn when he glanced back at her.
He smiled and kept singing.
The words ended and Flynn backed away from the microphone. He faced her and expertly strummed the last riff on his guitar. She clapped along with the audience.
As the last note rang out, Flynn dropped to a knee in front of Polly. His clear green eyes peered up at her hopefully.
“Polly, you mean everything to me. In front of all these people, I promise you my love and loyalty. We aren’t perfect, but that’s okay because we’re perfect for each other. I would be honored if you would agree to spend your life with me. Will you marry me?”
He pulled something from behind his guitar. He held a black box up to Polly and opened it to reveal a beautiful diamond ring.
She gasped. She loved this man but this proposal was completely unexpected. He really had surprised her. Tears of happiness streamed down her face. “Yes,” she said.
Flynn grinned and slid the ring onto her finger. “Yessssss.” He kissed her.
The crowd roared. Flynn took Polly’s hand and pulled her out of her chair. He held their hands together in the air in celebration as they walked offstage. The crowd ate it up. A chant of “Flolly” began. The rest of the band bowed and wrapped up the performance for the night.
Flynn leaned his guitar against a speaker, then pressed Polly against a nearby wall and kissed her. He tangled his fingers into her hair and fused his mouth with hers. He pressed his body close to hers, and Polly enjoyed the feel of his warmth and pressure against her.
Polly loved every minute. With Flynn, she felt like they could rule the world and accomplish anything, side by side. She knew that she and Flynn would find the best way to be perfectly imperfect together.
